DEFENCE.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,—ln your issue of the 16th inst. there appears an article, ‘ To-day China —-To-morrow New Zealand,’ dealing with a letter from the Rev. G. H. M'Neur, Canton, China.' It is well known that any country attacked by another, if it shows fight in the slightest degree (which simply means giving battle), aggravates the attacker, who then uses all his strategy and military, naval, and air might to subdue through frightfulness his opponent. I just.mention this well-known fact (which is taking place,in China, Spain, and other countries at the present time) to show that, should a raid take place on New Zealand, with the few men. we have and little war material to use, to show fight in such a case would be pure murder. The only safe way would he not to make any attempt to frustrate the raider’s plans, thereby saving the people and the country from annihilation, which would surely happen. With the protection New, Zealand has, and such an open ooast all round, to show fight would be, as good as putting a baby for a goalkeeper at a Rugby match.—l am, etc., Ex-Imperial Cavalryman.
