VIENNA ROTUNDE BURNT DOWN

The Rotunde, the Crystal Palace of Vienna, occupying a prominent position in the popular recreation ground known as Prater, was recently entirely destroyed by fire. A circular building, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, the Rotunde was built in time to accommodate the great World Exhibition of 1873. It covered an area of some 84,000 square feet and was crowned by a bold dome, the top of which was 310 ft above the ground. In the days of the Monarchy the building was put to various uses. In 1912 '(Reinhardt’s production of ‘The Miracle ’ was staged there. In 1904 it harboured Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. Since the War it had housed twice a year an important section of the Vienna industrial fairs. The ca,use of the fire, which entails heavy loss to the Government, has not been traced.—‘The Times.’
