SELF-DEFENCE FOR MERCHANTMEN
The new scheme of defence courses at, the principal commercial ports for officers of the Merchant Navy is the subject of a further Fleet Order issued recently, in which their Lordships express the desire that knowledge of the scope of these courses should he disseminated as widely as possible among Merchant Navy officers. The aim of the courses is to inform the Merchant Navy of the measures that will be taken by the Royal Navy for the protection of seaborne trade in war, and to make known to masters and officers the part that they must play if the maximum degree of safety to their ships is to be ensured. The instruction falls under two main headings:—(l) The general organisation of convoys and the way in which merchant ships should act, whether in convoy .or sailing independently, so as to secure the maximum immunity from attack. (2) The steps needed to ensure that_ a merchant shin which has been equipped for self defence shall develop the maximum fighting efficiency when attacked.— ‘ The Times.’
