BREAD CARTER'S THEFTS

MONEY SPENT ON DRINK REMANDED IN CUSTODY Failure to account for money received from bread sales was responsible for tho appearance in the Police Court to-day of Zair Williams,-.(34), who admitted a charge of theft of £36 9s Bd, the property of William Wright and Co., on divers dates between April 1 and October 31. For the past 16 months Williams had been employed as a bread carter by the firm, said Chicf-detective Young, and had failed to account for money received. He Had been drinking to excess. Ho was a. married man -with one child, ami had not previously come under tho notice of the police.

Mr O. G. Stevens said accused had already paid £l4 as restitution, but restitution bad not been made of tho amount involved in the charge, -which was not disputed. Tho manager of tho firm intimated that if restitution were made no proceedings would follow, but when the matter was placed before the directors a prosecution followed. Accused was making every effort to raise the money for restitution. Ho commenced drinking, became very fond of liquor, and drank to excess. All the money had been spent in hotel bars. Mr Stevens suggested that the firm had not prosecuted another employee who had also been dismissed for theft. Williams was remanded in custody till Monday by Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., who asked the probation officer to supply a report.
