Gorse fires at Mataroa road and Stone street were dealt with by the lioslyn and City Fire Brigades at 7.22 p.m. yesterday, while at 8.52 p.m. a false alarm summoned the City Brigade to Preston Crescent and Carnarvon street. It is thought that they were given because of the glare made by the gorse fires, tho smoke from which was blown over tho city in dense clouds. Exceptional business is being done by tho Government Tourist Bureau in connection with the coming holiday season, and tho district manager (Mr 11. G. Sincock) stated to-day that because of lack of accommodation in some of the resorts it had been found necessary to turn many persons away. There is still very limited accommodation available at Stewart Island.

Provision is made for separate lounges for men and women members of the association, as well as the necessary space for a room upstairs in the same building, where the billiard table will be installed for the members of the motor cycle section. Bad weather in the early part of the week caused a rise in fish prices because of the rather limited supply, and soles and groper has been very expensive; but they are a little more reasonably priced to-day. The claim that he could generally identify daughters of large families among candidates for training as nurses was made by Dr J. W. Craven, medical superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, in an address to the Diocesan Churchmen's Association. Dr Craven said it was his duty to examine all applicants, and he found that in most cases where a young woman was more than usually fit, clear-skinned, and selfreliant, she proved to be one of a large family. He had put his identification of this type to the test scores of times and had rarely known it to fail, although there was nothing scientific behind it. He did not know the reason, because it was commonly said that large families “ dragged one another up.”

_ There have p been no further notifications of infantile paralysis cases in the Otago and Southland districts. Apart from colds, the general health of the communities in the two areas has been good during the past week. Two cases of scarlet fever were reported in Otago, and one in Southland, with two of pulmonary tuberculosis from Otago and one from Southland. These returns indicate a normal situation. A Dunedin business man has received from a relative in Newcastle (Australia) a letter in which he mentions a family who returned from New Zealand a short time ago. Questioned as to the cause of their return they said that the basic wage had almost ruined them. It appeared that they hired a good deal or labour in their business, and though much of the casual labour they got was not satisfactory they were bound by law to pay the basic wage. The Newcastle man adds: “The principle may be all right, but I am afraid the results will not always be satisfactory. I’m a firm believer in paying on results, because I’ve proved it in my own efforts, and when in charge of bodies of workmen you can discover the shirker quickly, and the physically weaker man, but willing, you can make allowance for.”

The university entrance examination and entrance scholarship have been delayed a week this year, and will now be held from December 6 to 16. This has been found necessary in view of the shorter school year brought about by the infantile paralysis epidemic. The examinations will be held at the University, and Mr W. F. Watters will be chief supervisor.
