OBITUARY
MRS E. HERGUS Mrs Elizabeth Hercus, widow oE George Robertson Hercus, passed away* yesterday at her residence, Albert street. She was born at Lybster, Caithness, Scotland, on November 6, 1847, and at the age of 17 years came to New Zealand, with her brother, William, and sister, Hannah, to join her brothers* J. R. Elder and G. R. Elder, at Oaklands, Maheno. From there she was married in 1869, and came to Dunedin, where she had lived ever since. Mrs Hercus was one of the early menu bers of the Ladies’ Committee of Batchelor Hospital, and was president oE the Y.W.C.A. for two years, and later was appointed. a life member.. Her genial disposition attracted a wide circle of friends. The deceased was an active member of the Hanover Street Baptist Church for'4o years. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs B. D. Sutherland (Hastings), Mrs James Inga (Auckland), and Miss Hercus, two son#,Mr S. C. Hercus (Dunedin) and Dc E. O. Hercus (Melbourne University), three grandsons, besides a number of nephews and nieces and grand nephews and nieces and great grand nephews and nieces. MRS M. A. GRAY Mrs Mary Alice Gray, whose death occurred at her residence at Wellington on Monday, was born in Ballarat, Victoria, and came to New Zealand with her late husband, the Rev. R. S.' Gray, about 45 years ago. During her husband’s ministeries at the Baptist churches in Nelson, Christchurch, and Dunedin she endeared herself to a wide circle of friends. Outside her home life, her chief interests lay in the Girls’* Bible Class Movement and the Women’s Missionary Union. Her eldest son, Mr R. N. Gray, died in Melbourne last year, and a daughter. Miss Nora Gray (Wellington), and. three sons, Mr Alan K. Gray (Wellington), Dr Malcolm K. Gray (Christchurch) , and Mr W. _ Nelson Gray (Sydney), are the remaining members of her family. Miss L. R. Kersley (Wellington) is a sister and Mr H. W,Kersley (Lower Hutt) a brother; there are eight grandchildren. MR WILLIAM BROOKS Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, October 14. The death has occurred of Mr William Brooks, a noted city business man. He was head of a leading printing and stationery firm, and chairman of the Australian Federal Capital League. Ho was aged 78. (Received October 15, at 12.30 p.m.) The High Chief Tupua Tui Malealiifano, one of the two advisers in the administration of Samoan affairs, has died. His ago records are not. clear, but it is reckoned that he was over 90. He was Fautua previous to 1928, and resigned to join the Man movement. He was reappointed Fautua by the unanimous recommendation of the Samoans after the visit of the goodwill mission. The funeral will proceed to the chiefs’ burial place at Mulinuu, to-day. MR 8. F. TOLMIE VICTORIA, October 14. (Received October 15, at 1.30 p.m.V 1 Mr S. F. Tolmie a former Premier of British Columbia and twice Dominion Minister of Agriculture, is dead; aged 70.
