The mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) left for 1 . Christchurch this mornng to attend a meeting of the executive of the Soutbl Islands Travel Association, Mr W. Begg left to-day for Christchurch to attend a meeting of the South Islands Travel Association. Mr J. A. Campbell, director of the Government Horticultural Division, was a passenger by the express this moru-< ing, being bound for Wellington. Mr C. Mueller, distributor for the Murray Citrus Fruit Growers’ Association, travelled by the express to-day on his way back to South Australia. Mr A Juriss, of the Magistrate’s Court staff, who has been here for tho East five years, has received notice of is promotion to tho Petone Court. Miss E. M. Spiers, who has been a( member of the Saving Bank branch of the Post Office for a considerable number of years, retired on superannuation yesterday. When the branch closed for the day Miss Spiers was met by her; fellow-employees and presented with a fireside chair and an afternoon tea, wagon, the presentation being made by Mr N. R. M‘lsaac, chief postmaster. Messrs Hope, of the telegraph branch, Adamson, of the money order branch, and Whinray, of the postal department, also tendered their best wishes for Miss Spiers’s happiness in her retirement.

A Gazette notice announces that Lieutenant-colonel S. H. Ward has relinquished the appointments of assistant director of medical services and officer commanding the N.Z.M.C., northern command, and has been transferred to the reserve of officers, northern command. He has been succeeded by Lieu-tenant-colonel J. H. Will from the reserve of officers. Recent arrivals at the Carlton Hotel include Mr A. M‘Kenzie (Auckland), Messrs A. Urquhart and J.
