THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7. (Before Mr H. W> Bundle, S.M.) COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. Edward Edwin McLaren was charged with breaking and entering the shop of Harold Robertson Black at Ranfurly b j night and stealing £2 10s in money and a tin of tobacco, of a total value of £2 lls 9d, and also with unlawfully converting to his own use a motor cycle valued at £6O, the property of Charles Leslie Thomson, * • ... Harold -Robertson Black, a grocer, of Ranfurly, said that he resided with his mother; in . a house next door to the shop.. On the "night of September 27 he locked his, Shop, and when he returned next morning he found that one of the windows had_ been broken. There were marks indicating that someone had passed through the window. He found that about £2 10s in mixed silver was missing from a cash tray at the shop counter, also a tin of tobacco. Accused had been a customer at the shop. Constable Murphy said that the window appeared to have been cut with a glass cutter. Witness faiade a search of the road about three miles from Ranfurly and found the cash tray (produced). • Detective Gibson said that he interviewed the accused on October 1 at the Palmerston police station, when he admitted that on September 26 he had stolen a motor cycle at Dunedin, which he took to his home at Merton. The accused said that he rode to Ranfurly the following day and broke into Black’s store, stealing about £2 10s in money, a cash tray and a tin of tobacco. He said he rode back to Palmerston and abandoned the motor cycle there. Accused made a statement in writing,'admitting the offence. The accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence on the breaking and entering charge. He entered a plea of guilty to the other charge," the magistrate adjourning it sine die. . THEFT OF MONEY. Herbert Alick Headman appeared for sentence on a charge of the theft at Popoturoa on September 9 of £2 lls, the property of Percy Watkins. Chief-detective Young said that' accused had been sentenced to two years’ Bontal treatment by His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy on' another charge. The accused, who agreed to 14s in his possession being handed to the complainant, was convicted and discharged. BREAKING AND ENTERING CHARGES. Three young married: men, whose names were suppressed, and who were represented-by Mr C. J. L. White, were charged with breaking and entering the warehouse of Speight’s branch (New Zealand Breweries) and stealing a keg of beer valued at £4 12s. Chief-detective Young applied for a remand to "Wednesday next. The remand was granted, and hail wa# allowed in the accused’s own recognisance of £25. DRUNKENNESS. Daniel Taylor (73) pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness and to a breach of his prohibition order. Senior-sergeant Packer stating that the defendant was before the court in. December on a charge of drunkenness. For some considerable time he had been worrying his relatives by his drinking habits. The defendant was fined 10s on the charge of drunkenness, and on the other charge was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months. AFFILIATION PROCEEDINGS. Alexander Wilson 'was proceeded against on a complaint for affiliation and maintenance orders, Mr C. J. L. White appearing for the defendant and Mr 6. T. Baylee for the complainant. After evidence had been heard, the hearing was. adjourned until Monday to enable further evidence to be called.
