IMMIGRATION FOR LAND
SETTLEMENT N.Z. 8 PROBLEM [Per Unit*d Pm uc Association ' (| WELLINGTON, October 6. the question of land settlement it very closely associated with the Flock House Fund,” said Mr E. Newman, chairman of the trustees; at the annual meeting _of subscribers to-day. Ho: thought it was a great pity that them was hardly any opening in this country for New Zealand lads who wanted to so on the land. Mr Newman said he had recently received a statement to the effect that it was regrettable that the settlement * of Crown lands had not been made a greater feature in the policy .of the Government, for the reason that'hundreds of New Zealand’s promising young men could, with State assistance, be made valuable settlers. He had always advocated that the first step to closer settlement was the classification of land, not according to_ value, but according to its suitability for small; farms. That would have to come. New Zealand must have population, and any immigration should be directed the land, and not to the towns. Then : were difficulties to be overcome if sud» immigration were attempted. Mr J. Linklater said he thought their ' future activities would have to deal „ more particularly with the individual 1 boy and girl in New Zealand, and in • connection with their selection of farms ' of their own they would have to be helped as the years went by. Rather than haTe a settlement plan such as ! Panetapu. in the Waikato, he thought it would be better if each one chose his own land.
