VESSEL DELAYED
WATERSIDE DISPUTE WINCHES WORKED BY SEAMEH [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 24. Because seamen were engaged yesterday to work the winches on the Taupata, the watersiders, contending that this work is the province of the shore hands, refused to work the vessel. The men held a meeting at Lyttelton this morning, and affirmed their refusal to work the ship under existing circumstances. The employers refused to meet the men on this point, and the result was that the men acted on the threat and returned to their homes. About 21 men were engaged on the Taupata. The dispute has now been referred to the employers, the Shipping Association, Wellington, and to the owners of the vessel at Nelson. While the deadlock lasts the ship is idle. The Waimarino, which is indirectly affected by the dispute, was also delayed. Only one gang could be obtained to work the vessel this morning. It is officially reported that nonunion labour will be engaged by the Railway Department to work the Port Whangarei on arrival from Wellington. This occurred before a call was made for railway labour for the Waimarino.
