HIBERNIAN CLUB

The half-yearly meeting of the Dunedin Hibernian Social and Debating ,Club was held in the club rooms. There was a very large attendance of members. The auditor (Mr J. H. Thompson) presented his report and balance sheet, which showed a substantial increase in the club funds, in spite of expenditure on new furniture during the half-year. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The retiring president (Mr W. M'Alevey), reporting on the halfyear’s activities, said that the members had shown keenness and enthusiasm in the debates. Attendances had been good, especially in the early part of the year. The club team had won the Hayward Challenge Shield at the interclub competition of the Federated Catholic Clubs held at Timaru during Easter. In addition to the weekly debates, a successful Christian doctrine evening had been held under the direction of Father Hnnrahan, who had also given an interesting lecture. The president stressed the educational function of the club, and advised members to consider their' own interests and those of tho club by being regular in their attendance at the debates. Ho thanked all members for their cooperation with the executive during the half-year, and also expressed his thanks for the presentation which had been made to him on the occasion of his marriage. The election of office-bearers for the ensuing six months resulted:—President, Mr W. M'Alevey; vice-presi-dent. Mr L, Hanlon; hon. secretary, Mr H. Cullen; assistant secretary, Mr R. F. Fraser; treasurer, Mr P. M'Alevey; auditor, Mr J. H. Thompson; committee—Messrs V. Aitcheson, M. Brady, J. B. Cull, J. Cullen, O. Fraser. J. Lauren, J. J. Quinn, and A. Gillick.
