VERY COLD—HEAVY SHOWERS The following weather forecast was issued at noon by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, covering the southern districts—Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Tapanui, Winton, Invercargill, Riverton, Orepuki, Bluff, Halfmoon Bay:—• Pressure is very low to the south and south east, but high over the western and northern portions of the Tasman Sea, an intense anti-cyclone still being located over Australia* Forecast: Strong south-westerly winds, reaching gale force in places._ Weather changeable and very cold, with heavy showers and possibly hail and, in places, snow. Seas rough to high. STORMY AND BLEAK. Rain began to fall in Dunedin about 10.30 last evening, and later a squally wind accompanied a sadden increase in the intensity of the fall, the conditions becoming the most turbulent and unpleasant for some weeks. Little sign of a return to more normal conditions was given at 9 a.m., when the sky was heavily overcast, and heavy showers fell occasionally, the amount of the fall at this time having been ,31in. Noon found a blustering west-south-westerly wind prevalent, and a recurrence of the heavy rain. Barometric pressure at this time was steady at 29.25 in, while the respective maximum and minimum temperature readings were 41deg and 40deg, those over a period of 24 hours yesterday having been 53deg and 36.1 deg.
