SPARKLING LILY PONS MUSICAL

TALENTED SUPPORTING CAST One of the outstanding sopranos of tho world, Lily Pons, will again appear as an opera singer in her second film, 1 That Girl From Paris,’ which will commence what should bo a most successful season at tho State to-mor-row. "Miss Pons, who established herself as a film player in her first picture, • I Dream Too Much,’ will be beard in several songs, both new and old favourites being included. Tho latter will include ‘ Una Voco Poco Fa,’ from ‘The Barber of Seville,’ and a modern interpretation of ‘ The Blue Danube.’ The main appeal of tho film lies rather in its sophisticated comedy, however, an.d modern songs include ‘ Seal it With a Kiss,’ ‘My Nephew from Nice,’ and ‘ Call to Arms.” all by Arthur Schwartz and Edward Heyman. The laugh-pro-voking Jack Oakio takes a role which should rank as one of his most humourous. Tho other prominent member of the cast is Gene Raymond,, who takes the part of a young orchestra conductor. An excellent musician in real life, Raymond lias one of the finest roles of his career in this picture. . ‘ That Girl From Paris ’ deals with the adventures of a French opera singer who, to avoid a marriage, flees to America, not troubling to secure a passport. Sho thus has to become a fugitive from the immigration authorities, at the same time falling in lovo with the handsome orchestra leader.,- A series of adventures with the police and the Press follows, all complicated by the constant attendance of V small army of suitors. The film is very different from tho usual typo of picture in- which an opera singer appears, and Miss Pons displays unusual ability in her handling of a light, humorous role. The background shifts rapidly from the French countryside to an qcean liner, and thenco to America, finismng with a marriage ceremony in a motor car, which should bo one of the most hilarious climaxes yet seen on the screen. Tho picture is from the studios of the R.K.O. Radio Company and was directed by Leigh Jason.
