STYLES AT ASCOT
Ascot this year was distinctly a tailor-made festival, even on Gold Cup day, and very pleasing were most of the two-pieces (dress and coat), which were perfect in cut and becoming in style. The edge-to-edge coat is the style of this season. Elegant simplicity was the keynote on every day. Of course, there were bouffant organzas; they could indeed bo counted m hundreds. Some of them over silk foundations were so crisp and full that they might have been supported by crinolines. Gay colours, in large floral patterns, were a distinguishing feature. For instance, a long purple gown was accompanied by a hat trimmed with ostrich tips in red, blue, green, and yellow. Old-fashioned puce and magenta- were seen frequently. So was navy blue, with white designs, the mounting coat being either of wool lace ,or of lacquered deque, which has a pattern. Crimson, in deep tone, was always cheery and effective. The furs worn at Ascot are reported to have represented a mint of money. There were hundreds of silver fox furs made into deep capes. Fur trimmings were liberal and important, but in few instances did they protect the back of the neck. They formed sleeves, edged coat basques, made enormous revers,. but they were not intended to offer any protection from draughts. Lavish was the use of fox, in every colour, for trimming purposes. Dyed ermine came next, and this was used for very snug and light summer capes. Silver fox capes were seen worn over very short skirted frocks, as well as over dresses of flowered uinon. Hats. Apparently hats to wear with important Ascot frocks could not bo too large. A white hat with a red feather crown went back to “ cart wheel ” days. The crown matched the brief red' feather jacket with which it was worn. Another touch of red—the red of a peeress’s Coronation robe—was introduced in the swathed velvet belt which broke the slim line of the white crepe frock, as if to remind people that it was destined for Royal Ascot and Coronation year.
