PEDESTRIANS’ RIGHTS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Repeatedly every day I have had to submit to motorists ignoring my rights at the white-marked crossings. To-day one motorist would assuredly have run me down if I had walked further than I did on the white marking. I was on the kerb and halfway to the tram line when a light green sedan car flashed past me with no intention of stopping.; This was at 5.5 p.m.', on the crossing to the Post Office. The crossing from Hallenstein’s also is repeatedly ignored by motorists. When I drew the attention of a constable, who saw an incident at this last-named crossing, he only stared at me, making no remark. Unless one stands in the road when one wants to board a tram car one misses the car.’ Such was my experience when I waited to board a tram to Opoho at the Octagon.. It was at the corner, down from the, Town Hall. In Wellington there are plainly-marked stopping places for trams, and one is always sure 'of being able to board a tram at these places, but in Dunedin trams do not stop at corners unless required by passengersj so how is the motorman to see intending passengers on corners on the footpath when his view is often obscured by two or three cars hurrying by? Until this matter is remedied I fail to see of what, use the little booklet issued in Dunedin to householders is going to be. Dunedin for a very long time has lagged far behind northern towns, and in this matter of traffic must surely be a laughing stock to visitors.—l am, etc., August 4 Pedestrian.
