"CURSED BE HE..."

The- bones of Goyernor Arthur Phillip, founder and firs/ Governor of New South Wales, lie' buried in the churchyard of St. Nicholas, Bathampton, near Bath. Mr Lyons, Prime Minister of Australia, was inspecting the grave with the rector of Bathampton, when be casually suggested that it might be; a good idea to disinter Phillip's -remains and rebury them in Sydney, the removal to coincide with Sydney's 150th. anniversary celebrations next year. Some members of the Royal Historical Society favour this curious proposal, .but sentiment generally is against it,. A Sydney University professor described it as " ghoulish," and a former judge deplored the notion of having a. funeral mixed up with the 150th anniversary rejoicings. The council of the Historical Society is to disgmd the matter, bat the prospects are-that the admiral's bones will continue, to rest in. peace where they have lain since. 1814.
