UNEMPLOYED WORKERS' MOVEMENT

LOCAL BRANCH MEETS A general meeting was held in th* Trades Hail on Tuesday evening, when Cr M. Silverstone presided over a good attendance of members. Correspondence from-the various out* side , unions and > the Minister of Labour was dealth with. The organising report showed that five new members had joined, one member had died, and 15 had received clearances on receiving full-time work. The monthly financial statement was submitted by the secretary, and showed the branch to be in a very satisfactory position. The secretary reported that -he had visited the Sawyers Bay job last week as instructed, and also the placement officer and the certifying officer on different complaints received since the last meeting. These had been rectified. The president gave an outline of what the Government was prepared to do to place the. unemployed back on. work all over New Zealand if the various local bodies were prepared to assist in the way of overhead-costs, such a* supervision and material. The matter of coal for single men was again brought up, as it was reported that many single men living in rooms and baching were still being refused a bag of coal by the officials of the mayor’s relief depot. The : winners of the two 10s free grocery orders were Messrs Blackford and Sanderson, Nos, -78 and 80. The executive’s recommendation that the monthly* donation of £2 to the national executive be now withdrawn _ was carried. Two members were appointed to attend the Rugby matches to check the unemployed books as requested by the Rugby Union.’ A few complaints were left in the secretary’s hands to be rectified. The matter of unemployed men in the Hospital was discussed, and tb« secretary agreed, if he received notice, that he would pay them a visit and assist as far as possibles He also reported that he was now authorised to give oufe sick and authority fotms to all Hospital cases, and thus save waiting at th* Labour Bureau. The < secretary wa* again instructed to visit the Sawyer* Bay job as soon as possible. The following resolution was carried:—* “That the Dunedin branch of the N*» tional Unemployed Workers’ Movement urge the Minister of Labour and the Government to pay all men on unemployed and sustenance rates the basi* wage of £3 16s a week.” The secretary is to request the su tional executive to ask all branches fof their moral support. It was reported that, from now on, men in Pert Chalmers and Sawyers Bay would be included in the ballot for th* Sawyers Bay railway job, and likewise single meii in Dunedin, the secretary having taken the matter up with th* officials concerned in placing the name* in the ballot.
