WELL-INFORMED CITIZENRY MR FRASER ON DICTATORS AND MILITARISM “ CLOSE TO WORLD WAR LAST WEEK " [Per United Press Association.] WHANGAREI, June 29. “Since 1914 we never were closer to a world war than last Thursday,” said the Hon. P. Fraser, at a reception at Whangarei. Ho attributed tho present crisis to the rise of dictatorships and militarism, and said democracy was in danger of being scrapped as in Germany, Italy, and other countries, unless it adjusted itself to tho present everchanging complexities. ■ New Zealand must play her part in contributing to the maintenance and safeguarding of the British Commonwealth, the greatest force upholding democracy. The Minister emphasised the necessity of giving children free access to the fountains of knowledge, so that they could judge facts and think for themselves. An intelligent and wellinformed people was tho only real safeguard for democracyIn tho Dominion, the most democratic country in tho world, an attempt was being made to apply democratic ideals in relation to economic production.
