ST. HILDA BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL | The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was held last night, there being present the Mayor (Mr J. J. Marlow), Crs G. Glue, W. Davidson, J. H. Hinton, 11. S. Brent, T. D. B. Roy, N. D. Anderson, J. Cherry, W. J. Lovell, J. A. Cameron, W. Rutherford. FINANCE. Accounts totalling £1,711 7s 6d were passed for payment. It was reported that receipts amounted to £463 3s lid, while the credit balance stood at £3,138 3s 9d. The chairman of the Finance Committee (Cr Anderson) said that prior to the next meeting the council had to pay interest amounting to £1,615, wages maintenance totalling £9O, and salaries amounting to £6O, making a total of £1.765. Added to this was the amount passed for payment, bringing the total debits to £3,476 7s Od. Receipts for the fortnight would bo about £BSO, so that, with the credit balance in addition to £2 600 on deposit in the Dunedin Savings Bank and the Post Office Savings Bank, there would be £6,588 3s 9d against the debits. FIRE PLUGS. Cr Hinton, chairman of works, reported on the satisfactory state of the fire plug flows since tho_ cleaning and relining of the water mains. The Fire Board’s inspector had submitted the following readings, the figures given referring to gallons a minute and those in parentheses to flows recorded before the reconditioning of the pipes:—Market and High streets, 210 (130); Royal Crescent, 180 (125) ; Victoria road and Moreau street, 300 (125) ; Jackson and Dalgety streets, 250 (75); Grove street, 230 (55); Albert street, 180 (140); Calder and Dalgety streets, 190 (75) De Carle and Dalgety streets, 220 (80) ; Alfred street, dead end, 720 (40); Auld street corner, 115 (40) ; all Bay View road intersections, 230 (65 to 75). Cr Hinton was thanked for his work in connection with the improvements. CULLING PARK LABOUR. In replv to the council’s application for tin* services of 20 men for approximately two months to undertake the levelling of Culling Park and a strip of land in Royal Crescent, the Acting Minister of Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb) wrote stating he was pleased to advise that the department was prepared to meet the full wages cost of up to 20 registered and eligible unemployed men for the work. The council would be required to _ meet insurance costs and other incidental costs, such as supervision, materials, tools, etc. —Received. The Mayor remarked that the position was very satisfactory, especially as the work on the Royal Crescent strip had been authorised. ' On behalf of the Musselburgh School Committee, Cr Brent conveyed thanks to the mayor for the part he had taken in the Culling Park improvements. REPORTS. The foreman’s report stated that work done included patching streets and footpaths, excavating for kerb and channel in Quarry street, and sweeping channels. It. was suggested that during the ensuing period the kerb and channel bo laid_ in Quarry street .and .work continued in connection with the Quarry'street yard.—Adopted. . The plumber’s report gave details of 18 water hursts repaired. Other matters attended to were the reading of water meters, repairing a burst in the Bay View road water main, inspecting the borough daily, cleaning and repairing meters, repairing taps and stopcocks, repairing a Richardson street fire plug, cleaning a choked water service in Bay View road, and the water pressure and volume in various streets.—Adopted. The inspector’s report stated that 83 drivers’ licenses and one heavy traffic license had been issued. Two building permits had been issued. There had not been any notifications of infectious diseases during the last two weeks. General inspection of the borough had been carried out, and all complaints had been attended to.— Adopted. WATER ACCOUNT. The total amount of water consumed l was 3,998,000 at a cost of £99 19s. The cost for tho previous fortnight was £lO5 14s.
