LAUNDRY WORKERS

ARBITRATION COURT AWARD The Arbitration Court has filed its award covering the wages and working conditions of Otago and Southland laundry employees. A 40-hour week has been granted, to be worked on five days of eight hours each between 8 a.m, and 5 pm. from Monday to Friday inclusive. Overtime is to be calculated daily and paid for at the rate of time and a-half for the first three hours and double time thereafter. The following are the recognised paid holidays: : —New Year’s Bay, the day following New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Anzac Day, and the King’s Birthday. Work on any of these holidays is to be paid for at double rates. An annual holiday of one week on full pay is to be granted to every worker on completion of 12 months’ service. i For male workers the wage for the first half-year is 15s at 16 years, rising by half-yearly rises to 72s 6d at the end of the fifth year. A youth starting at from 16 to 17 years receives 20s, and rises to 72s 6d at the beginning of his fifth year; at 17 to 18 years the starting wage is 255, increasing to 72s 6d at tne end of the fourth year; at 18 to 19 the starting wage is 32s 6d, increasing to 72s 6d at the end of the third year; at 19 to 20 the starting wage is 40s, increasing to 67s 6d at the end of the second year; at 20 to 21 the starting wage is 555, increasing to 66s at the end of the first year; and thereafter 90s. - For female workers the rates are:— Under 16 years, start at 15s and rise to 40s at the end of the fourth year; 16 to 17 years, 17s 6d and rise to 40s at the end of the fourth year by halfyearly increases; 17 to 18 years, start at 20s and rise to 40s at the end of the third year; 18 to 19 years, start at 22s 6d and rise to 40s at the beginning of the third year; 19 to 20, start at 25s and rise to 40s at the end of the second year; 20 to 21 years, start at 27s 6d and rise to 40s at the beginning of the second year; and thereafter 4Ss. The award is to operate throughout Otago and Southland, and will come into, force on July 5 and continue in force till January 5, 1938.
