The Austin-Grant match was a battle of similar type of players, with the Englishman brainier and better all round. • Grant led 5-2 and had set point in the second set, after which Austin won five games in a row. ■Parker’s long-range steadiness overcame Henkel’s more vigorous hitting. Budge opened • quietly against M'Grath, hut speeded up after the score was 3-3 in the first set, forcing the Australian to drive out. M'Grath, nevertheless, strenuously contested every point. A dour struggle ensued in the second set, despite the fact that the American lost only one game. Budge raced to a 4-1 lead in the third set, his speed telling. M'Grath then played grandly and evened, 4-4. The final game went to five deuces, M'Grath saving three match points. Budge thus maintained his reputation in winning matches in straight sets. The Crawford-vbn Gramm encounter saw some beautiful driving: Crawford is not fully fit, and is suffering from a cold, but he handled von Gramm’s kicking service well. The Australian led 5-4 in the second set, but von Gramm, mixing his pace cleverly, took the set. Crawford served magnificently in the third set, and, with the German over-driving, the Australian took the set. Crawford also called the tune in the fourth set, von Cramm continuing to drive over the base line. Fine passing shots by von Cramm enabled him to take the lead, 4-1, in the final set. Crawford was now very tired, and had not the stamina to contest the German’s hard drives. If Crawford had won the second set he would, on his form, probably have won the match.
