4ZL TO CLOSE

PURCHASED BY GOVERNMENT LAST SEBSWN THfMHMW After to-morrow, one B class broadcasting station will drop from the ranks of those at present operating in Dunedin, leaving three to carry on a service that was until a few years ago maintained by six stations. To-morrow; morning’s session will be the last transmission from Station 4ZL, which has been sold to the Government by Radio Service Ltd. It is fitting that the station should close with the Sunday morning session, which has been one of the most popular for many years with 4ZL listeners.,. The station, which is to he taken over by the Government on Monday, is the second oldest B station in Dunedin, having commenced broadcasting in October, 1927. For over nine years this station has been on the air for a total time of 7,535 hours, divided into 3,635 transmissions. Many listeners will remember that it was this station which, in 1929, initiated breakfast sessions in New also the early morning relays of GSSW, Radio Paris, Radio Roma, and other short wave stations, which proved so popular, but were eventually stopped by the Government. For a long time the early morning news session, “ Telechrom Time,” and the “ Physical. Jerks ” by Mr Hanna were very popular with listeners. Evening listeners will also remember “ Music That Pleases,” “ Tenors of the World,” “ The Classical Hours,” and many other units which were included in the popular programmes arranged by Mr Cherry, the present announcer. It will be recalled that the other stations which -.formerly took their places in the line of B stations in the city were 4ZF and> 4ZW, .the former being sold when a transfer from on* owner to another was refused, and tn* latter closing down following the death of its, owner.
