THE PLUNKET HOSPITAL
PUBLIC APPEAL FOR FUNDS “ Amongst the most important institutions in-the community to-day is the hospital which serves as a training ground for the nurses who operate iu the interests of child welfare across the country,” says the mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox), in commending the appeal of the Plunket Society for funds for a new Karitane Hospital at Anderson’s Bay. “ Many organisations have _ claims upon our benevolence and charity, but none has a more pressing claim than this one. Organised more than a generation ago by Sir Truby King, who thereby started a movement for the saving of child life, the society has become a pioneer in infant welfare across tbe world. Its records are astounding. So great are its achievements that it can claim to be one of the most beneficent organisations of the day. Yet in all that space of years its premises have been inadequate and its equipment out of date. If these great results could be secured with such handicaps as these, what could accrue if the hospital were equipped with buildings and plant of modern design? “ Given this most needed supply, I can visualise the society doing work in the next quarter of a century that will leave the great and splendid records of the past entirely in the background. Dunedin citizens have responded generously to all urgent appeals, and it is not too much to expect that the twenty thousand pounds needed to erect and equip this hospital will be forthcoming.” ____________
