MEMBERS’ SALARIES
PROPOSED INCREASE MAJORITY VOTE IN COMMONS. Pre»s Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, June 22. (Received June 23, at 12.40 p.m.) Only a few voices were raised in opposition to Mr Chamberlain’s motion that the salaries of members of the House of Commons be increased to £6OO yearly, which was carried by 325 votes to 17. Mr Chamberlain said he was surprised and distressed to find thflt many members were living beyond their means, were obliged to curtail their children’s education, and actually allowed themselves insufficient food. “We do not want to fix a salary which will induce people to enter the House of Commons for the purpose of earning more than they could outside, he said. “On the other hand, we do not want the salary so low that men and women capable of valuable service are prevented from entering the Commons. The extra cost will bo £112,000 yearly.”
