A FAST WICKET

ANOTHER CENTURY WORCESTER SCORES 374 STEADY BOWLING AND GOOD FIELDING (From the special correspondent of the United Press Association with the New Zealand cricket team.) LONDON, June 9. (Received June 10, at 10 a.m.) The consistent steadiness of New Zealand’s bowling was a feature of the first day’s play in the match against Worcestershire at Worcester. The wicket was the fastest experienced during the tour and the outfield was also fast, but the bowlers kept to their task with fine heart, the scoring rate always being moderate. Gallichan persistently pegged away, delivering 33 overs for only 55 runs before taking a wicket. Vivian was also inexpensive and was effective against the tail-end batsmen. Roberts’s reward for long periods of steady bowling might easily have been richer. The ground fielding was frequently applauded. A fine catch was made in the slips by Roberts and good ones on the boundary by Lamnson.

Worcester, which has beaten Derbyshire, Glamorgan, and Warwickshire, topped 200 for the loss of only two wickets. Cooper, a 20-year-old recruit from Lancashire league cricket, played soundly. Grimshaw, a former Yorkshirernan took four and a-half hours to make his century. The howlers then enjoyed supremacy till Horto.n and Bn Her added 70 together in 40 minutes, the former hitting strongly and cleanly. The attendance was about 1,200. A good crowd is expected for the second day, which is a half holiday in Worcester. Tindill, Cowie, Dunning, Wallace, and Donnelly are standing down from the New Zealand team, which includes Lowry. The Worcester team is as follows: —Bull, Grimshaw, Cooper, Gibbons, Martin, Horton. Howorth, Buller, Perks, Jackson, B. W. Quaife (captain ).
