POLICE COURT
MONDAY, MAY 3. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) OBSCENE LANGUAGE. John Duncan M'Lennan pleaded guilty to using obscene language, Senior-sergeant. Packer stating that the accused was a soldier pensioner and a seaman, who came out of an hotel at Portobello at 6 o’clock on Saturday night and challenged another man to fight. There were words, and the language complained of was used. There were not many persons about at the time. Accused was one of those men who should not take drink. ■ M'Lennan was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months, conditions being that he took out a prohibition order and paid the amount of the fare from Portobello to Dunedin (12s 6d). THEFT OF CYCLE LAMP. A young man, whose name was suppressed, appeared for sentence on a charge of the theft of a bicycle lamp. Mr O. Stevens appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty. Chief-detective Young said that the man had stolen the lamp from a bicycle and had sold it for 3s 6d. There were far too many lads succumbing to temptation of this nature. The Magistrate remarked that each particular case had to be considered on its merits. Ho would adjourn the charge for 12 months on condition that the accused made restitution of 3s fid within 14 days, was of good behaviour during the next year, and was under the supervision of Mr H. W. Wilson, the social worker of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, associated with the probation officer. DRUNKENNESS.
Two first offenders, one , a woman, were each fined 20s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment.
