Concern was caused in Melbourne overseas shipping offices recently by the sudden withdrawal by the Department of Commerce of all permits to carry frozen mutton and lamb. Leading shipping officials criticised the department far its sudden action, which will mean a heavy loss to shipping firms who had already arranged space for the carriage of such cargo on seven or eight vessels which are at present on the Australian coast, and which would reach Great Britain in June. In view of the short notice given, it would be impossible to obtain other cargo, and the vessels would of necessity sail with part-filled holds. _ Replying to the criticism of the shipping officials, officers of the Department of Commerce stated that the permits had not been cancelled, hut had been withdrawn, possibly temporarily, to enable the department to ascertain, the quotes of export mutton and lamb for the first half of 1937. At present the department was endeavouring to obtain increased allotments, and it was hoped that the matter would be settled speedily. PASSENGERS BY TAIPING.
