PRACTICAL PSYCHOLOGY CLUB

The subject for discussion at the Dunedin . Club . last Thursday evening was ' The Unconscious Faculties _ of Mind.’ In using the powers of mind, it was stated, the deeper the action of thought, will, and desire, the greater the result. Mental action to be strong and effective, must act in the field _ of the mental undercurrents. Anything received into this mental undercurrent would be seen through to a finish regardless of external circumstances or conditions; and it was with difficulty that the course of these currents was changed when once it had been placed in full positive action. This made_ it very necessary, therefore, that nothing that one did not wish to encourage or promote was permitted to take action in these undercurrents.

These undercurrents or unconscious forces were commonly defined as the subconscious mind. There was only one mind in man, but it could be described as having two phases, the conscions and the sub-conscious, the conscious being the upper side of the mentality, and the sub-conscious the under side. The sub-conscious had powers, -functions, and possibilities the force and capacity of which had not been measured.

The sub-conscious mind controlled all the natural functions, of the body such as circulation, respiration, digestion, assimilation, and physical repair. Jt also controlled all the involuntary actions of the body, and all those actions of the mind and body that continued their natural movements without direction from the will. it perpetuated characteristics, traits, and qualities that were peculiar to individuals, species, or races.

Various faculties of the sub-conscious mind were dealt with by club members, and heredity, habits, race memory, desire, creative imagination, and their relation to the sub-conscious mind discussed.
