LIFTING A CHURCH

WALLS TO BE SAWN THROUGH A Greek Catholic church in Budapest is to bo lifted one _ and a-half metres above its present height.Owing to the levelling of tho street the little church has sunk to an inconvenient extent, and tho process of lifting it will be 'done according to the patent plan of Mr "Friedrich, a city councillor. The walls of the church are being sawn through- by electricity, and, supported by iron rods, will be raised by screws. After each few inches raising the gap will be filled in with cement and files. Tho lifting of tho church will cost about £BOO. BUILT OF SEAWEED. Houses built of seaweed are a new possibility indicated by reports from Germany. It has been found that seaweed, mixed with cement, makes lightweight building blocks of good heatinsulating qualities. The same experimenters nave found that peat, shavings, and sawdust, used in a similar manner, also have properties which make them valuable as building materials. REGULAR REPAINTING. In Sydney city and suburban buildings architects are trying to eliminate, as far as possible, tho cost of regular repainting. Faced bricks or tiles that can be kept clean by hosing—or by rain alone as optimists believe—are favoured. One great building now almost complete is a conspicuous example of this. There are no projections along the front to collect dust or prevent tho even ilow of rain water down tho face, and theoretically it should be always clean and fully presentable. Bungalows and flats in the suburbs are being treated in this way by careful folk. It must not bo supposed that there is any neglect of painting where it is necessary, but tho tendency is to use as little wood as possible .on tho outside.

TWO SUBSTANTIAL HOMES. A contract for the erection of a brick residence in Manuka street for, Mr G. L. Tnpley was lot by Mr H. M'Dowell Smith (architect) to the Lovo Construction Co. Ltd. last Friday morning. Two days previously a contract was let by the same architect to Wm. M'Lellan and Co. for the erection of a two-storied wooden residence on the Eastern terrace at Queenstown for Mrs W. Meniove.
