UNIONIST STRENGTH

NUMBERS RISE BY 114,000 IN YEAR [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, April 20. Expressing themselves well pleased with the Labour Conference that concluded at Wellintgon yesterday, the Auckland delegates said to-day that since March, 1936, the number of unionists in New; Zealand had increased by over 114,000. It was reported to the conference that there were now 195,000 members of unions in New Zealand, compared with 80,920 in March, 1936. This increase was attributed to I compulsory unionism in cases where employers were covered by awards; also to the number of new unions formed since the Labour Government assumed office, many of them covering a wide field of industry, such as the clerical workers.
