POLICE COURT

MONDAY, APRIL 19. (Before Mr H. W.'Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Hugh Hickey, who had spent some time in the cells, was fined the amount of cab hire (2s 6d), in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. . Adrian Syrus Somerset was convicted and discharged. A first offender was fined 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. UNLIGHTED MOTOR. Garnett Saxon Broadhead, for whom Mr D. Silverstone appeared, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving an unUghted motor car. Senior-sergeant Packer said that only one headlight was burning. A faulty connection was apparently the cause of the trouble. A fine of 6s and costs was imposed. CHARGE ADJOURNED. A young man pleaded guilty to the theft-of a pair of blankets, valued at 20s. Detective-sergeant Hall stated that the accused lived at the complainant’s hoarding house, and when, he left early this month he took -away with his own belongings the blankets which were the subject of the charge. He was asked to return them, but did not do so. The accused said it was'purely neglect oa his part that he did not return the blankets, which were mixed with his own effects. Ho had no intention of stealing them. The Magistrate said it was an act of folly on accused’s part, and he did not intend to enter a conviction. The charge was adjourned for 12 months. MAINTENANCE. Nelson Pollett appeared on remand, charged with disobedience of a maintenance order, and was further remanded to appear at Christchurch on April 21. Bail was not allowed. John Albert Mcggett was proceeded against by his wife (represented by Mr 0. 0. Stevens) for default of a maintenance order, the arrears to February 1 being £lO5 19s. Meggett was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as he paid £lO before May 3. Arrears over £3O were remitted, and he was ordered to pay 30s a week after that date.
