Messrs Wheatley and Brown ably controlled the game. UNIVERSITY A v. COLLEGIATE. Varsity had a rather easy win over Collegiate by 13 goals to 0 at Tonga Park. The new Varsity forward line proved very effective, and to see the short, sharp passing of this line so early in the season must have been a gratifying spectacle to their coach, Dr Norman Edson. Lawry, the ex-Auck-land and Waikato representative, played a sound positional game at centre, and notched 5 goals. Armstrong, a promoted player from the C’s, practically played himself into the A’s for the season. Walton played his usual good game on the wing, and made some determined runs up the right wing, but on occasions took the ball too far and met sound opposition in Tyrell, who was undoubtedly the best full-back on the field. ‘ Aldred at inside left played a great scoring game, and gained six nice goals. Hubbard on the left wing had little to do, as the right forwards kept the play. The game was a fast one, with the Varsity forwards shining. Johnston, of Collegiate, played well, but was well marked by Warren. Gash and Baird were sound. Baird’s positional play was at times faulty. Brebner and Hay had little to do. The former was slow in the recoveries, and his clearing shots lacked sting. > Hay seemed nervous, but his hitting was cleaner, and he has speed, which is much in his favour. ‘ Hercus in goal saved well on several occasions, and is probably the best goalkeeper in Otago. Scorers for Varsity: Aldred six goals, Lawry five goals, Armstrong one goal, Walton one goal. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS v. UNIVERSITY B. The High School Old Boys’ A team held the upper hand throughout in the game with university B. The latter team consisted largely of promoted juniors, who were having their first experience of, senior hockey. Though the Blues put 'up a gallant fight and succeeded time and again in stalling off the attacks of the winners, the bulk of the play was made by Old Boys. Edgington, who was again in the centreforward position, played a good game and scored one goal, the other being obtained by Gray. High School 0.8. A. ... ... 2 University B 0
