On- Poppy Day, which will be observed oa Friday next, April 23, crosses of remembrance will be on sale for the first time in addition to poppies. These are in the form of a small wooden cross to which a poppy is -affixed, and may be placed by those who desire to do so in special boxes at the foot of the fallen soldiers’ memorial or on soldiers’ graves in the cemeteries. As the result of a raid by the police late on Saturday morning three men appeared before Mr H. E. Holler, J.P., at an afternoon sitting of the Police Court, charged with various gaming difences, and were remanded till Wedneday. The men concerned were Noble Ritchie Callaghan, who was charged with keeping a common gaming house, Wilbur Halsey Stewart, who . was charged with assisting in the management, and Henry Herbert Gillard, who was charged with being found on the premises. In the case of Callaghan and Stewart bail was allowed in self at £IOO each, and Gillard’s bail was fixed at £5 in his own recognisance. The postal authorities advise that the Waikouaiti left Sydney on Saturday evening for Bluff with eight bags of Ansf'vdiau mr : ’ The -ail should reach the local office next Fxi- , uay morning.
