BOYS WITH AIR RIFLES
PARENTS' RESPONSIBILITY STRESSED LAD SERIOUSLY INJURED [Pee United Peess Association.] AUCKLAND, April 12. The danger of parents allowing young children to use air rifles was exemplified when a hoy of 14 appeared in the Children’s Court as the result of seriously injuring another lad in the eye. The Magistrate (Mr Wyyern Wilson) stressed the responsibility of parents, stating that the air rifle was a firearm within the meaning of the Act, and a dangerous weapon in the hands of children.
The damage in this case was done while a group of boys were playing in a city park. The Child Welfare Officer remarked that in the course of his inquiries he had found that a considerable number of parents did not realise their responsibility in the matter, and were not aware that it was an offence, for children to have possession of air rifles. The magistrate directed that _ the Press be asked to give some publicity to the case, thus indicating the seriousness of the offence.
