DRUIDISM
Arch Druid Bro. Borthwick presided over the regular meeting of Enterprise Lodge, which was held last Wednesday, there being a good attendance of members and visitors. Before the lodge was opened the officers and members entertained the members of Southern Oak and Progress Juvenile Lodges. The syllabus was in the hands of the members of the Syllabus Committee, who carried out their various duties in entertaining the boys. Several games and competitions were put on, and after a very strenuously-contested competition D.P. Bro. AV. G. Leathley presented the winners with their prizes. Supper was handed round to the boys, after which a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the lodge by the Arch Druids of the juvenile lodges. The- bards’ report disclosed that there is still a fair amount of sickness prevalent among the members, and sick pay amounting to £l6 was passed for payment. During the. evening _ the officers had the pleasure of initiating one candidate into the mysteries of Druidism. Royal Arch Druid Bro. Rainbow, accompanied by the Chapter officers, paid the lodge an official visit. They were given a warirt. welcome by the Arch Druid. In the correspondence was an invitation from Otago Lodge for three members, with their lady friends, to attend a function in honour of Bro. .1. AA r . Dove on his completion of 21 years’ secretaryship, and Bros. A. Leathley, AA T . Johnston, and R. S. AA’ebb were appointed to represent the lodge. D.P. Bro. AV. G. Leathley addressed the members with matter pertaining to the juvenile lodges, and was accorded a vote of thanks for his address.
At the regular meeting of Inly of the Valley Lodge, held on Wednesday, V.A. Bio. Preecly, in the absence of the A.IX, presided over a fair attendance of members. Apologies for absence were numerous owing to several other important functions being held that .evening, but the paucity of members was negligible in view of the enthusiasm displayed by those present. The Syllabus item of impromptu speeches was the tit-bit of the meeting, and it was left to the secretary to submit suitable subjects for the event. Varied topics of current interest, together with humorous items, were-selected and each member drew by ballot the subject of his talk. The manner in which each speaker handled his topic was deserving of the highest praise, and some very interesting and instructive speeches were the order of the day. In the correspondence dealt with during the business portion of the meeting were invitations from Otago, Royal Oak, and Bay Lodges to attend important functions being held at their respective meetings, and it was decided to accept these. Accounts and sick pay amounting to £1 were passed for payment, and the Arch Druid and secretary were empowered to make the arrangements necessary for a ladies’ evening next meeting, when it was decided to commence at 7.30 p.m. The lodge was honoured by the presence of several visitors, among who was a brother from Melbourne.
(Bay Lodge No. 18 held its fortnightly meeting in the Masonic Hall, St. Kilda, on Monday, April 5. The chair was taken in the early part of the evening by A.D. Bro. J. Hay, who subsequently retired to attend a function at Otago Lodge. P.D.P. Bro. G. Wilson then took the chair for the rest of the meeting, there being a good attendance of members. P.D.P. Bro F. E. Reeves, secretary Royal Arch Chapter, and P.A. Bro. D. A. Young, treasurer of the chapter, attended officially to conduct a vice arch competition under the control of the Royal Arch Chanter. This competition was held at the start to allow members to attend another function, and resulted in Bro. J. Johnston securing first place and Bro. W. Campbell second. A vote of thanks was accorded the judges, who briefly replied. The correspondence was dealt with and invitations accepted to attend Royal Oak Lodge on Monday, April 12; for the installation of District President; from the Star of Tnapeka Lodge to visit Lawrence on Saturday, April 24, when members are requested to make the trip. An invitation to the United Friendly Societies’ Dispensary jubilee concert was received, but, as Bay Lodge is honouring Grand Presided Bro. D.A. Young on April 19, it will be impossible for the officers to attend. The secretary was instructed to send on congratulations to the U.U.F.S. Dispensary Committee. Sick pay and accounts were passed for payment. Arrangements were completed for next lodge night, when the lodge will meet at 7 p.m.’
