MONASTERY FOR CANBERRA
With the sympathy and moral assistance of the Prime ‘Minister (Mr Lyons), an influential section of the Roman Catholic community in Canberra is pressing the Benedictine Order authorities in England to establish a monastery in the Australian capital. Over eight years ago a Melbourne doctor left £50,000 for the establishment of a Benedictine monastery in Canberra on condition that this was done within 10 years. In ah effort to take advantage of the bequest, which by this time has grown considerably in value, interested persons, with the backing of Roman Catholic members of the Commonwealth Parliament and the Bishop of Coni burn, in whose diocese Canberra lies, recently communicated with the Abbot of Downside, head of the Benedictine Monastery at. Bath (England), seeking his co-operation and approval. The Abbot has now replied promising to send to Australia this year two of his representatives to examine the proposal and all the problems connected with it.—Reuter.
