INFANTILE PARALYSIS

NORTHERN FLARE'UP [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, April 8. A girl, aged seven, died in the Christchurch Hospital to-day from infantile paralysis. The Health Department received notification of a fresh case, a girl, • aged eight years. The medical officer of health (Dr T. Fletcher Telford) said that the girl who died had been notified as a positive case on April 6. The new case is from the'Beckenham district. FIFTH CASE ON COAST GREYMOUTH, April 8. A case of infantile paralysis, a girl,aged eight, from Totara Flat, was admitted to the Greymouth Hospital today and diagnosed as positive. The right ankle is affected to a mild degree. The two other patients in the Greymouth Hospital (both children) are progressing satisfactorily. There have now been five cases on the West Coast, two of which have proved fatal. WANGANUI SCHOOLS CLOSED WANGANUI. April 8. As a result of the notification of ai case of infantile paralysis, affecting a child in Wanganui, the Wanganui East School has been closed, and all Wanganui East pupils have been excluded from attending the Intermediate and Keith Street Schools. Special isolation, precautions have, been taken at other, schools. POSITIVE CASE AT MASTERTOH MASTERTON, April 8. A suspected case of infantile paralysis, that of a three-year-old girl from Martinborough, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital on Tuesday. The case has now been diagnosed aS positive. The patient is affected in the right leg. THREE MAORI CHILDREN INFECTED [Per United Press Association.] GISBORNE, April 9.. Three new cases of infantile paralysis were reported to the headquarters of the East Cape health district to-day, all the patients being Maori children.Two cases came from Waihau Bay (Bay of Plenty), and the other from Te Whaiti, in the Urewera Country. POSITIVE CASE AT lALCLUTNA An eighteen-months-old girl has been admitted to the Balclutha Hospital with positive symptoms of infantile paralysis. This is the only case recorded in the Otago and Southland area during the 24 hours ended at 9 a.xn. to-day, and will not involve the closing of the scKbols in the district concerned.
