UNEMPLOYED WORKERS MOVEMENT

: DUNEDIN BRANCH MEETS , The general meeting of the Dunedin branch of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement was held in the Trades Hall on Tuesday evening. Cr M. Silverstone (president) presided over a very large attendance of members and their wfves. The organising report showed that four new members had joined up since the last meeting, one had been trails? ferred, and 15 had been granted clearances to other unions .on /receiving; full-time work. The monthly financial statement was read, and showed the branch to be in a very satisfactory position at pre--sent, both in regard to finance and membership. Both reports were adopted; The secretary was instructed to get in touch with Mr J. W. Munro, M.P., in connection with addressing a public meeting in Lawrence, as requested. It was agreed that the quarterly social evening should be abolished, and in place thereof two 10s orders for groceries be granted at every meeting in the meantime, the orders to be delivered to the home of the winners. . The Secretary reported on all the complaints tabled at last meeting for investigation, with satisfactory results in all cases. The cost of living was discussed at length by the members, and the president fully explained the Government’s policy to counteract any great advance in prices. A few complaints were heard and left in the secretary’s hands to deal with. . It was agreed to draw the Minister of Labour’s attention to certain hardships which would occur if a certain clause in one of the received, were enforced on relief workers’ dependents. An important notice of motion was tabled concerning the No. 5 scheme men employed by the City Council, to be discussed at the next meeting. Any man failing to return his form by the. above date will be deleted from his. group, and will not receive any further relief until he has been reposted by the employment bureau.
