The council'was; asked by Mr L. C. Robertson to remove a bank opposite his property at Portobello in order that he could erect a garage.—The request was declined, the. council holding,that the owner of the property would have to remove the bank. The attention;.of the council was drawn by the Waverlcy Ratepayers’ and , Householders’ Association to the “ deplorable ” state of the lower end of Larncch read.. The letter,mentioned that,i/i.the past few weeks two vehicles

had broken their axles in this locality. —The Engineer said that the road would be attended to in the next few weeks. The need for a sign at the junction of the Tomahawk, and Highcliff roads was referred to by Mr W. E. Scott, who suggested that the sign should take, the form of a-white post With several glass dots.—Councillors agreed that difficulty was experienced in finding the mad, and it was,- decided to erect a sign post. ■ : Application was made.by Mr If. J. Bishopp, Broad Bay, for a permit to; build a garage on his section.—The request was declined, in conformity with previous applications. Permission to form a roadway - into her property in John street, Broad Bay, was asked for by Mrs A. Ct Gooch.—The request was'granted, subject to -the engineer approving -of the entrance to the property, - The proposed installation by her of a petrol pump at her store at Broad Bay was the subject of an applicatiofi' for 'permission to erect it ..from Mrs M. Pur-yis,—The • application was approved, provided that the’; Engineer was consulted when ,the pump was being fitted. , ■ ■ ; The- council's permission fOr the erection by him of a garage on a waste portion of the' road at Macauclrew Bay was asked for by Mr R„ L. Landreth. ■—The application was declined. Jri order to Allow access for building material, an application was made by, 'Mr J.,o'.;ThQmsbn. asking the council if- it, would be prepared to excavate a pdrtioii'of a hank fronting the Lower Portobello road at Vauxhall.—Subject to the applicant carrying out the work, permission was. declined. COUNTY FINANCES. . : The following riding balances were contained in the monthly financial statement which was submitted to the meeting:—Otago . Heads,.'.. £3O 3s:, 8d (debit-); Sandymount, £52 2s 6d (credit); Highcliff, £93 Is Gd (credit); Tomahawk, £3l -10 s (debit); Northeast Harbour, £55 5s (debit) ; Broad Bay,- £ll2 7s'4d; (Portobello, £204 12s Id. The cash book balance was . £867 12s 3d; accounts to be passed for payment totalled £1.404 14s Id, and accounts' already paid amounted to £521 13s Id. The debit balance, was £1,750- 13s 3d. Amounts due to v t.he council - totalled £1.895, including £1,200 for rates. The report was adopted. RANGER’S REPORT. The county ranger (Mr E. Campbell) reported that he had found three cattle wandering on county , roads during February.—Received. ' BUILDING PERMITS. The county clerk (Mr J. Seaton) reported that ’he had issued two building permits—one for a garage, valued at £25, and the other for a boatshed, valued at £s—during February.—Received. ' • ‘ , ENGINEER’S REPORT. Work carried out in the county during February was reported on by the engineer (Mr S. G. Paterson) as follows : Sandymount Riding.—The stone, and log culvert on the Ridell’s to Hooper’s Inlet road near Mr Weiper’s house had been replaced with a 3(iin concrete pipe, and the old culvert filled in. Portobello Riding.—Water tables had been cleaned, potholes -patched, and general surfacing done on the Main road. Maintenance metal was spread on the Portobello end of the road. Maintenance metal had been spread on two chains of the , Portohello-Capo Saunders road to cover potholes. North-east Harbour Riding.—Maintenance work was done on the following streets in Maeandrew Bay:—Howard street, Marion street, Maeandrew street, and - High street. The filling of. the hole on the road from the Beach road to Higholiff had been suspended owing to the urgency of other work. Broad Bay Riding.—Surfacing work and cleaning of water tables had been done on King George street and John street (Broad Bay township). Highcliff Riding.—A small amount of surfacing work was done on the Highcliff road. Tenders were called for the metalling of a further portion of this road.

Tomahawk Riding.—Water tables had been cleaned on the Tomahawk highway, and surfacing done on the hill section. Grader.—The grader had been employed on the High road, Tomahawk road, Portobollo-Otakou road. Porto-bello-Cape Saunders road, and Hooper’s Inlet road. The report was adopted.
