BIENNIAL COMPETITIONS [Pek United Press Association.} NELSON, March 11. . The New Zealand United Fire Brigades’ biennial competitions were commenced this morning in a cold drizzle, which later gave way to bright sunshine. The one-man coupling and fourmen motor events were concluded this afternooii. The Gilberd Memorial and gold medal s for one-man coupling was won by F. H. Steward (Whakatane), who was second in the last competitions, _ The four-men motor, which is the first of the new modern events drawn up to cope with a fire off the direct lino of route, was won by Nelson, Results:—
—One-man Coupling.— Whakatano 50sec. Hawera 54 2-ssec, Hastings 55sec. Carterton 57sec. Denniston 58sec. Rotorua 62 4-ssec. Twenty-nine started. -Four-men Motor.— Nelson 28 2-ssec. Devonport 29 2-ssec, Hokitika 33 l-ssec, Dannevirke 34sec. Morrinsville 34sec. Featherston 34 l-ssec. Twenty-eight started, ■ NELSON, March 12. _ The competitions were continued this morning. The events were delayed by trouble with th.e"hydrants. Result:—. —Two-men Hose and Stand Pipe. —> Petonc 33 2-ssec. Matamata, 37 4-ssec. Birkenhead 38 l-ssec. Upper Hutt 40sec. Te Kuiti 43 3-ssec. Oamaru 43 4-ssec.
