MILK IN SCHOOLS

CONTRACT ARRANGED FOR DUNEDIN EXTENSION OF NATIONAL SCHEME A -scheme whereby free milk will be supplied daily to the children of the primary schools in Dunedin and suburbs will be brought into operation on March 8, which is a week after the schools are reopened. Hie new scheme is part of the Government’s Dominion-wide undertaking to supply all school children with milk, and when it is extended throughout the country its cost is expected to reach £IBO,OOO annually. A meeting of the Milk-m-Schools Committee was held yesterday, the mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) presiding. 'This committee was set up at the request of the Government to make local arrangements for the supply, and comprises representatives of the City Council Education Board, Schools Committees’ Association, the Otago Hospital Board, and the medical profession. Representatives of the Health Department were also present at the meeting. An intimation was received from the officer in charge of the milk scheme in Wellington of proposed arrangements for a contract with the Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supply Company Ltd. for the supply of milk to all schools in Dunedin and suburbs. >lilk was to bo supplied in scaled half-pint bottles, together with a straw with which to drink. The committee expressed the opinion that the terms of the proposed contract were reasonable, and decided to recommend the Government to accept it, , . . The contractors will deliver the milk to tho respective schools prior to school hours, and will later in the morning call for the empty bottles. Details as to methods and actual time of delivery wore discussed, and it was finally decided that a meeting of the Head Masters’ Association and the executive of tho School Committees’ Association, with a representative of tho Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supply Company should be hold on Thursday, March 4, for the purpose of making tho most satisfactory arrangements. The medical officer of health and the officer in charge of the Department will undertake tho duty of certifying the supply and the methods of handling the milk.
