MEMORIAL WINDOWS

FINE WORK BY DUNEDIN ARTIST TRIBUTE TO AUCKLAND VICAR Workmanship of a very high standard, comparing very favourably ■•. with work of a similar nature carried out by overseas craftsmen, has been provided by a Dunedin artist and worker in stained glass, Mr J, W. Brock, in two beautiful memorial windows shortly to be dedicated and unveiled as a memorial to the late Rev. W. G. Monckton, who for 27 years was vicar of the parish of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Takapuna, Auckland. Tho windows will bo dedicated by Archbishop Averill, and will probably be unveiled about the second week in March bv the Governor-General (Lord Galway) * to whom Mr Monckton was related. Standing about six feet in height and measuring 17 inches across, the windows depict St. Peter and St. Paul respectively. Both are reported to be characterised by particularly fine attention to detail and are done in antique glass of good quality. Tho predominant colourings are blue and dark red. The inscriptions at the base of each window describe the nature of the memorials and the terms of Mr Monckton’s service to the parish.

Both portions of the memorial are to be inserted in the east windows of tho church above the altar, and they have been designed to match the central light, a stained glass window depicting tho Good Shepherd. Friends of the late Mr Monckton and members of the church formed » committee shortly after his death in January, 1935, with the intention of providing a fitting memorial, and these beautiful windows are the result of their efforts. Among the contributions received by tho secretary, the Rev. D. G. Bates, were two sums from the Workers’ Educational Association and the Victoria, League, to both of which organisations Mr Monckton had lectured.
