A TRAMP’S APPEAL TO A LINER. A story of one of the most unusual Christmas appeals on record was related by passengers on the P. and 0. liner Mooltan. At 10.30 a.m. on that day) of universal goodwill, which was spent in the Red Sea, a small tramp steamer was seen to hoist a W. flag signal, which indicated that medical assistance was required. The Mooltan’s speed was slackened and her first aid boat lowered. At the same time a boat from the tramp came across to the liner and waited for the medical boat to come alongside. Passengers on the liner’s decks anxiously watched the little drama, expecting to see the doctor and his staff transfer, and make a speedy rush to the tramp. Instead, after a small parcel had been handed over, both boats returned to their stations. All that was required was a dose of castor oil for a child on the tramp, which was the Findal—and it was before Christmas dinner. GRACE HARWAR’S LAST VOYAGE. Captain G. Holm, master of the Finnish barque Winterhude, which reached Auckland last week from the Seychelles, was the last to command the old fullrigged ship Grace Harwar (which was in Auckland in 1932). The Grace Harwar left Port Broughton, South Australia, in April, 1935, with a cargo of grain for London. After a voyage of 97 days to Falmouth she sailed to Victoria Dock in the River Thames to discharge, and then in ballast went on to Rosyth, in the Firth of Forth, Scotland, where she was broken up. The break-up took place in the same yard as that of the stately Mauretania, queen of the Atlantic passenger trade for so many years. “It was my first and last voyage in the Grace Harwar,” said Captain Holm. “ I found her a good ship to handle. In this respect she resembles my present command, to which she was similar in build and only slightly less in tonnage. She made a good passage Home, maintaining her fine sailing reputation to the last. Incidentally, there were no casualties on board. Evidently, at the end of her long life, she had decided to reform, and I was sorry to see her go.” Captain Holm’s reference to the old ship’s reformation was prompted by the fact that on many of her voyages during the early years of the century at least one death, or a serious- accident, occurred in her.
