CONFERENCE OPENED BY HON. P. FRASER A NATIONAL SCHEME [Pee United Press Association.} WELLINGTON, February 17. The Hon. P. Fraser opened the oon-, ference of the Library Association. He paid tribute to the work of the librarians throughout the Dominion, and on behalf of the Education Department he thanked the librarians for what they had done in providing reading matter for children. The Government had not announced any policy in regard to libraries, and the question of .a national library had had to be postponed while more urgent matters were dealt with, but plans had been sketched for a national scheme, and a report had been made to the Government. He hoped that something would be done at no distant date. Library extensions were important now that the people had more leisure. This aspect was also stressed by Mr W. J. Gaudin in his presidential address. He particularly dealt with the needs of rural districts.
