AMATEUR ATHLETICS

OTAGO CENTRE In the absence of the president, Mr R. Thomson was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, held last evening. CORRESPONDENCE. The Mayor (Mr E. T. Cox) wrote asking that the centre make arrangements to co-operate with the carnival of the Hundred Thousand Club to be held at Easter, which would run for about nine days and nights. He desired a tentative programme with values of trophies.—lt was left to the Sports Committee to advance a programme. The Secretary of the Wellington Centre wrote advising that a list of the sports and events in which New Zealand was to be represented at the British Empire Games, to he held in Sydney from February 5 to 12, 1938, had to be forwarded to Australia October 31 of this year. A complete list of names of the competitors must be received in Australia by December 31, and additions and replacements would be received .not later than January 22. It was decided by his centre that application be made to Australia for extension of the times for entries, and he asked the Otago Centre to consider the matter as early as possible. He also requested a nomination for a selector both for the North and South Islands. Mr M'Kernan moved that the New Zealand championships be held in December, prior to the selection of the team to go to Australia. Mr M'Kernan was nominated as the South Island selector.

Consideration of the Japanese tour had been given by his council, wrote the secretary of the New Zealand Council, and he advised that the itinerary had been altered. It was noted that the Auckland Centre did not desire the appearance of the Japanese athletes at the New Zealand championships, but the council considered that it would be a decided slight to the visitors if they were not given the opportunity of appearing. It was also resolved that the visitors should compete only in scratch invitation races and short handicap races, as it bad previously been found that visiting athletes had to compete against impossible handicaps.—Received.

ENTERTAINMENT FOR VISITORS. It was decided that in connection with the arrival of the Japanese athletes in Dunedin, they be tendered a civic reception, and a committee comprising Messrs Q. L. Tapley, Barnes, Masters, Shepherd, and Clark was appointed to arrange for the entertainment of the visitors. HARRIER RACE RULINGS. Mr M'Kernan commented upon the rules for cross-country running submitted by the Wellington Sub-commit-tee. They coincided in almost every particular with the general rulings.— It was decided that the rules as submitted l>e adopted. TROPHY FOR W. A. C. PULLAR. Mr Barnes moved that, in view of the excellent performance registered by W. A. C. Pullar in the mile, he be presented with a trophy to commemorate his achievement.—Carried. GENERAL. 11. S. Sanderson applied for a transfer from Civil Service to the University Club.—Granted. In view of the depleted funds Mr M'Kernan moved that the question of sending a team to the New Zealand championships at Auckland be referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act.—Carried. It was moved by Mr Heaton that capitation and registration fees be paid by the end of April, and that delegates’ representation on the centre be forfeited, and clubs debarred from open competition.—Carried.
