PRISONERS’ ESCAPADES
STORE ROBBERY ALLEGED [Per United Press Association.] WANGANUI, February 13. Escapades of the prisoners of the Owhango district were discussed in court to-day before Mr Salmon, S.M., when Harry Thomas Betts and John Joseph Morris were charged with on or about December 7, at Owhango, breaking and entering the store of Thomas J. M'Keo by night and stealing £l2 and a cash register, two cases of butter, tobacco, and stores valued at about £lO4. They were also charged with converting a car to their own use at the Chateau, valued at £350, the property of J. L. J. D. Bayfield, Evidence was given by Lindsey Edist Garner, a prisoner, that with the_ accused and another prisoner he decided o get out of the huts some night and go to Tauniarunui to get a, supply of goods. At that time they had complained of the quality of the prison food. He detailed how pieces of wood were removed from the hut doors, and how they went to the Chateau for a car and thrice to Owhango, where the store was robbed. The accused pleaded not guilty, and were committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
