GOLF

£By Suck.]

A St. Andrew’s Cross stroke handle cap was played on the Balmacewea - iinks last Saturday afternoon, and the senior division resulted in a tie for ' two young players in J. N. Lemon (6) and C. W. Glover (11), with 68 ' net. This good score will probably result in a reduction of handicap. Tha best gross score was an excellent /I, , compiled by J. A. Soouler, and hia - handicap of 1 brought him into second, 1 equal place with R. R. Aspinall, 80—-= : lU —7O. A. G. Sime is playing very - consistently just now, and holed a r2 off scratch. The writer would not ba surprised if J. A. Penrose, who returned a 72 net last Saturday, and« who has lately transferred from , St. Clair, reduces his handicap. In the B grade, G. A. Russell 86— 18—68) and A. A. Hudson (88—20— 68) tied for first place, and this good score was closely followed by B. S. Bevin (83—14—69) and W. \V. Johnstone (85—16—69). . - The Otago links are in good order just now, and should be in great condition for the popular Easter tournament. A large entry competed in tha monthly stroke handicap, played at St. Clair last Saturday. An absence of wind was conducive to good scoring,; > and C. Rhodes returned an excellent} card of 69—3—66, to win the senior division. Rhodes plays a powerful game. Second place was taken by H< L. Boock with 79—12—67, while H. AGamble holed a nice 72—4—68. Tha second best gross score of the day was returned by C. B. Wight, 71—1—70, and yet 10 players were ahead of him with a net score of under 70, thus showing that the low-handicap player has little chance under excellent? summer conditions. In the juniors, K. A. Skinner and H. J. Luff returned sensational cards* of 63 off handicaps of 15 and 18 re-. spectively. Each of these improving players should soon effect substantial reductions in their respective handicaps. No fewer than three players returned excellent net scores of 65. and ■ deserved a better fate, in W. G. Kindley. N. W. Skinner, and S. Marett. A match with an exciting finish took place at St. Clair over last week-end' between teams representing the Commercial travellers and the St. Clair Club, the former team winning by tha narrow margin of one game. The match took the form of four-ball games, both morning and afternoon* and in a number of instances combinations which were defeated in one of the rounds managed to have their revenge in the afternoon. Events such as these are! invariably enjoyed to the full, and this one was no exception.
