One hundred passengers are in perilon the Brazilian liner Santos, which sent an SOS: ‘‘Drifting helplessly, position desperate, engines dfimagcdj all lifeboats swept away. Drifting towards Berlengas Island.” * Because of the violent storm it was impossible to send out a rescue tug. ‘ The steamer Jonge Jacobus, from Rotterdam, is reported to have sunk after grounding on Berlengas. Island. The crew were saved with the' exception of one who was washed overboard. ■, At Gibraltar 47 steamers arc sheltering from the gale. ■ TJie fourth destroyer flotilla is also sheltering. Many ships suffered minor damage.," In Madrid blizzards and snow are holding up the war activities. HEAVY GALES CONTINUE . (British Official Wireless.) • RUGBY, January 29. (Received January 30, at noon.) The cold north-easterly gale Continues, and the coasts, of the British Isles are being lashed by heavy seas. Considerable damage has been done in several parts, notably Wales,, where seas broke through the defences, and flooded the streets in. some of the coastal resorts. ' : Snow fell in London, and the street* of Dover are swept by-snowstorms. Shipping .is suffering a severe buffeting. After being holed.through fouling the cable of an anchored German steamer off Gravesend, and narrowly, missing a collision with a ferry boat, ,the small Dutch motor sloop. Wiljaa drifted ashore. The captain, his wife, and child; and the crew were rescued. Road conditions in many parte of th* country are exceptionally bad, and in Dorset many motorists found it necessary to abandon their cars for the night and seek shelter in road houses. ’ The oCfcupants of a bus, which »«| snowed up in a desolate area at Exmoor had great difficulty in reaching shelter. Many roads throughout th* country are unusable or are dangefou* for traffic, although the main roads ar« generally clear.
