CHEAP BANANAS
MARKET OVERSUPPLIED IMPORTERS FACED WITH HEAVY LOSSES [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 9. Bananas are cheaper in Wellington than they have been for years, retailing at from 12 a shilling to as high as 30 a shilling, and they are quite eatable, too. Wellington has been deluged by a shipment, lauded from the Islands by the Matua, including a large quantity of ripe or overripe and not permitting the fruit being kept or sent any distance. Importers are faced with, heavy losses, and growers who sent on consignment are adversely affected. DUNEEHN MORE FORTUNATE AMPLE SUPPLIES OF RIPE FRUIT As a result; of the transhipment of the greenest of ’ the bananas, brought by the Matua to Wellington, Dunedin is now well supplied with ripe fruit. The transhipments were wasty, but not.- overripe -as in Wellington. The bananas received in Dunedin came from Tonga and Samoa, the Fijian consignments being due by train to-day and by boat ! on Monday. Further supplies of Samoan bananas are due at Lyttelton on Monday by the Maui Pomare which-has 7,000 cases aboard, 1,000 of which are for Dunedin. These are expected here on Tuesday in a green condition. Unfostunately, said a fruit broker this morning, the Nuie shipment of 2,600 cases was left behind at Nuie, the reason for this not yet being apparent.
