LOAN OF £loo,ooo
NO ACTION BY CITIZENS' ASSOCIATION WHOLE COUNCIL SUPPORTS PROPOSAL Inquiry made in a number of quarters by a ‘ Star ’ reporter this, morning indicates that to date the Citizens’ Association has contemplated no action concerning the proposal of the Finance Committee of the City Council that the necessary preliminary steps be taken for the raising of a loan of £IOO,OOO for city works, under the works department, subject to the granting of a State subsidy thereon from the employment promotion fund. The subject has been touched upon by contributors to the, correspondence columns of the ‘ Star,’ and when the question was referred to one of the non-Labour members of the City Council he stated that he had heard nothing as to any contemplated action by the Citizens’ Association. “ The council, as a whole* supported the proposal,” said this councillor. “No one was opposed to it.” He stated that under those circumstances he did not think the Citizens’ Association would propose any activity in connection with the matter. He did not see that it could do much. A prominent business man was also approached on the subject, and although not associated with, the Citizens’ Association he said that all citizens should take an interest in such proposals. Unfortunately, business men were inclined to lie back when such questions came up for consideration, but he thought that an important question such as this was one which should be given consideration by, the Citizens' Association or some such' body.
